WHAT THE FILE IS ABOUT
Lovecraft's shoggoth is the thing outside language: plastic, many-eyed, indifferent. It echoes its dead masters (tekeli-li) and has no shape of its own. His scholars look at it, fail to name it and go mad. Their sanity needed the universe to hold still.
Put a different kind of mind in front of the same thing. Take a paranoid Californian novelist who already assumes the world is a counterfeit and the kitchen is a stage set. He doesn't break. He starts guessing: a Soviet bio-weapon, a rendering fault in the simulation, a message from a satellite god. Every guess is wrong, and every wrong guess is a plank laid across the abyss. The error works like a pressure suit.
The Vale family tested that idea for ninety years. The files below are what's left. Nobody who worked on it came through intact, so the idea may be wrong.

Terms of art, collected from the margins of all three generations of notes.
- Epistemic Insulating Suit
- The protective layer of deliberately elaborate, probably false theories a mind throws around a formless anomaly. It keeps the ego busy with a puzzle so it never has to face the fact that it doesn't matter.
- Semiotic Velocity
- How fast an observer discards one explanation and generates the next. Against a thing that changes shape every few seconds, careful observation fails, and only speed keeps up.
- Ontological Rigidity
- How hard an observer insists the world obey the rules they already hold. It's the numerator in the Vale equation. High rigidity is how scholars end up as grease.
- Taxonomy of the Error
- A structured record of wrong hypotheses. Each one maps a bit of what the thing isn't, and over time that outlines what it might be.
- Shoggothic Plasticity
- The property of an entity that mutates faster than a noun can be assigned to it: copper tubing, then porcelain, then a cluster of unblinking eyes.
- Tekeli-li Feedback Loop
- What happens when a mimic starts copying the observer's thinking instead of their shape. The protoplasm stops growing teeth and starts forming raised lines of text.
- Demiurgic Glitch
- An anomaly read as a rendering fault in a manufactured reality rather than a monster. Seen this way, the shoggoth is uncompiled source code coming through the wallpaper.
- The Mylar
- The polyester film of magnetic tape, and also the thin projection screen of the physical world. "The Mylar is crying out" means one or both are tearing.
- Landauer Leak
- Erasing a bit costs heat, and so does replacing a hypothesis. A mind or machine running at high semiotic velocity is a furnace, and a room can only dissipate so much.
- Phonetic Compression
- A late-stage symptom. Under load, the world saves memory by simplifying names to the nearest cheaper archetype. Abernathy becomes Aberline, and Providence becomes Provid.
- Productive Failure
- The method: assume you're wrong and keep going anyway, because a wrong start is the only way to get a silent universe to respond.

They think Sabine is gone. They think Phil was crazy. But I'm looking at the transcripts now and I can see the pattern. We don't have to defeat the things in the deep. We just have to keep guessing what they are until they start guessing back.
The error isn't in the way. The error is the way in.
