# OpenSRD

OpenSRD is a clean-room packaging of the Cepheus Engine System Reference Document for this repository. Cepheus Engine and Samardan Press are trademarks of Jason "Flynn" Kemp. This packaging is not affiliated with Jason "Flynn" Kemp or Samardan Press.

The rules text was copied from a public Markdown snapshot that designates that text as Open Game Content under the Open Game License Version 1.0a, except for the titles of products published by Samardan Press and the trademarks "Cepheus Engine" and "Samardan Press". Where this folder came from, and the two mechanical edits, are recorded in [SOURCE.md](SOURCE.md). The license, the Section 15 notices from that snapshot, and the compatibility-statement text reproduced with it are in [LICENSE](LICENSE).

## Clean-room boundary

`SystemReferenceDocument/` in this repository was not opened, copied, or paraphrased for this folder. OpenSRD does not include 334 Cepheus house rules, and `334-cepheus/` was not edited or used as a rules source.

No table here was filled from a commercial book. A chapter that is present is the upstream open text, tables included. This package does not add stat lines, careers, ships, or worlds to stand in for a closed book.

## What to read

The Markdown contents page is [src/SUMMARY.md](src/SUMMARY.md). Read the files in `src/` directly, or open the generated HTML.

Core task resolution is in [src/introduction.md](src/introduction.md) under "Die Rolls", with skill checks in [src/book1/skills.md](src/book1/skills.md). The other requested topics each have a full chapter:

| Topic | Chapter |
| --- | --- |
| Core task resolution | [Introduction](src/introduction.md), [Skills](src/book1/skills.md) |
| Characters | [Character Creation](src/book1/character-creation.md) |
| Skills | [Skills](src/book1/skills.md) |
| Personal combat | [Personal Combat](src/book1/personal-combat.md) |
| Equipment | [Equipment](src/book1/equipment.md) |
| Spacecraft | [Off-World Travel](src/book2/off-world-travel.md), [Ship Design and Construction](src/book2/ship-design-and-construction.md), [Common Vessels](src/book2/common-vessels.md), [Space Combat](src/book2/space-combat.md) |
| Trade | [Trade and Commerce](src/book2/trade-and-commerce.md) |
| Worlds | [Worlds](src/book3/worlds.md) |

The same open text also includes psionics, environments and hazards, encounters, refereeing, adventures, and the Vehicle Design System. Those chapters are in [src/SUMMARY.md](src/SUMMARY.md). They were kept because they are part of the same Open Game Content snapshot, not because they are house rules.

## Build the HTML

Markdown under `src/` is the source. `html/` is a generated reading copy.

```bash
cd OpenSRD
npm install
npm run build
```

Then open `html/index.html` in a browser. Run `npm run build` again after editing Markdown. The build rewrites relative `.md` links to `.html`, adds heading ids, and does not change rules wording. Node.js 18 or newer is enough. mdBook is not required.

## Deferred

Not in this folder:

- The upstream interactive sector generator and space-encounter generator (`src/tools/` in the source repository), including their JavaScript and the js-markov script loaded from a CDN.
- Print layout, covers, and artwork from the DriveThruRPG PDF or the print edition.
- Commercial Cepheus Engine books and other publishers' closed text.
- Any file from `SystemReferenceDocument/` or `334-cepheus/`.
