334 Cepheus Supplement: The Indifferent Dark — Psionics & Dread
Introduction: The Mind Is a Sensor
The brain did not evolve to perceive reality. It evolved to build a useful fiction —a predictive model that keeps the organism alive long enough to reproduce. Consciousness is not a window. It is a story the nervous system tells itself about the data streaming in from the periphery.
Psionics is the first crack in this fiction. The psionic mind has learned to perceive signals that the standard human sensorium filters out: the electromagnetic whisper of another's thoughts, the spatial topology of remote locations, the thermal signature of emotional states. Psionics is not magic. It is unfiltered perception.
The Indifferent Dark is what happens when that filter is removed entirely.
The entities of the Dark do not assault the mind. They are perceived by it. A human without psionic talent might walk through a Residual zone and feel only mild nausea, a sense of wrongness they cannot articulate. A psionic perceives the zone's true topology directly. They see the angles that do not sum. They feel the space that contains more than itself. And because the human mind is a pattern-seeking engine, it attempts to integrate this perception into its model of reality.
This is where dread begins. Not as fear. Fear has an object. Dread has only a shape —the shape of a hole in understanding.
Part 1: The Architecture of Dread
Conscious vs. Subconscious Impact
The mind processes the Dark on two levels. These are not separate tracks; they are a feedback loop, each amplifying the other until the loop becomes unstable.
Conscious Impact: The Anomaly Detected
Conscious perception of the Dark is cognitive dissonance in real time. The mind encounters data that violates its predictive model. The model attempts to update. The data resists integration.
Mechanical Expression: Cognitive Load
When a character perceives a phenomenon consciously (through direct observation, psionic probing, or instrument analysis), they accumulate Cognitive Load. This is distinct from Dissonance. Cognitive Load is temporary; it represents the mind's immediate struggle to process.
| Cognitive Load Level | Conscious Effect |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Peripheral unease. The character notices details that seem wrong but cannot identify why. −1 DM to tasks requiring sustained attention. |
| 3–4 | Focal distortion. The character's perception of the phenomenon becomes unstable. It seems to shift when not looked at directly. Suffer Bane on all tasks while in the phenomenon's presence. |
| 5–6 | Model collapse. The character cannot form a coherent mental image of their surroundings. Navigation, targeting, and social interaction are impossible without an INT 8+ check each round. |
| 7+ | Catatonic integration. The character's conscious mind shuts down to protect itself. They are awake but unresponsive, internally constructing an alternative explanation that does not include the phenomenon. |
Reducing Cognitive Load: One hour in a stable environment reduces Cognitive Load by 1. Sleep reduces it by 1D3. A successful Psychology or Medicine check (TN 8+) from an ally reduces it by 2.
Subconscious Impact: The Dreaming Mind
The subconscious does not struggle to integrate the Dark. It absorbs it. The subconscious is not bound by the conscious mind's need for narrative coherence. It processes patterns, associations, and probabilities without requiring causality.
This is more dangerous.
Mechanical Expression: Dream Contamination
After any exposure to a phenomenon, roll 1D6 when the character next sleeps. On a 1–3, they experience Dream Contamination.
The Referee describes a dream. It is not a nightmare. It is accurate. The dream contains true information about the phenomenon, the environment, or the future. However, it is encoded in the dream logic of the subconscious: symbolic, emotional, spatially inconsistent.
Example Dream: You are eating breakfast with your mother. She is pouring milk. The milk is the color of the jump drive's coolant. She says, "The third moon is hollow because it is listening." You look out the window. The third moon of the planet you are approaching is visible. It has no reason to be hollow. Your mother smiles. Her teeth are the texture of the ship's hull plating.
Upon waking, the character may attempt INT 8+ to extract usable information. Success: gain one true fact about the current situation, encoded metaphorically. Failure: the dream fades, leaving only a persistent emotional residue (suffer Bane on the first task of the day).
Psionics and Dreams: Psionic characters roll 1D6 for Dream Contamination on a 1–5 (not 1–3). Their expanded perception makes subconscious absorption more likely. However, they extract information on INT 6+, not 8+.
Part 2: Psionics and the Dark
The Psionic Advantage (and Catastrophe)
Psionics is expanded perception. The Dark is more reality than the standard mind can handle. For psionics, the Dark is not hidden. It is loud.
Psionic Perception of Phenomena
| Phenomenon | Standard Perception | Psionic Perception |
|---|---|---|
| Residual | Mild nausea, sense of wrongness | Direct perception of non-Euclidean topology. The psionic "sees" the extra dimensions. |
| Predecessor | Déjà vu, temporal confusion | Simultaneous awareness of all probable states. The psionic exists in the probability cloud. |
| Lexicon | Cannot perceive without reading | The Lexicon is audible as a "carrier wave" behind all thought. Psionics hear it constantly at low volume. |
| Observational Hazard | Nothing, until measured | The psionic's awareness is measurement. They trigger the hazard simply by being psionic nearby. |
Mechanical Effect: Psionic Strain in Dark Zones
When a psionic character enters a phenomenon zone, they must make a PSI 8+ check each hour or suffer Strain as if they had used a psionic power. This Strain is not from effort. It is from perceptual overflow —the psionic mind attempting to process data it was not evolved to handle.
The Overflow Cascade: If a psionic character reaches 0 Strain from phenomenon exposure (not from power use), they do not fall unconscious. Instead, they enter Receptive State —a waking trance where their PSI effectively doubles for all perception checks but they cannot take physical actions. In this state, they perceive the phenomenon with perfect clarity. They also broadcast everything they perceive to all psionic beings within 1 kilometer.
This is how psionics become beacons. A psionic in Receptive State does not merely see the Dark. They illuminate it for others.
New Psionic Power: Dread Sense
Skill: Dread Sense Time: Passive or 1 action (active scan) Range: Self / Medium (active) Strain: 1 (passive) / 3 (active)
Passive: The psionic is aware of phenomenon presence within Medium range. They cannot identify the type, only the direction and approximate intensity ("strong," "moderate," "faint"). They also sense the Cognitive Load of all beings within Short range as a vague emotional texture.
Active: The psionic focuses on a specific phenomenon or being within Medium range.
| Effect | Result |
|---|---|
| Marginal Success (0–2) | Sense the phenomenon's emotional "flavor" (stable, hungry, growing, dying). |
| Success (3–5) | Perceive the phenomenon's structural nature (Residual, Predecessor, etc.) and its approximate scale. |
| Exceptional Success (6+) | Briefly perceive the phenomenon from its own frame of reference. Gain 1 Insight but also 1 Dissonance. The experience is not traumatic; it is simply more information than the conscious mind prefers. |
Special: Dread Sense is not blocked by walls, vacuum, or standard shielding. It is blocked by Residual zones (they distort the sense) and by the Lexicon (it creates interference patterns that mimic false phenomena).
New Psionic Power: Subconscious Communion
Skill: Subconscious Communion Time: 10 minutes Range: Touch Strain: 4
The psionic enters a trance and communes with the subconscious mind of a sleeping or willing subject. This is not Telepathy; the psionic does not read thoughts. They enter the subject's dream architecture.
Effect: The psionic may:
- Extract one Dream Contamination from the subject and experience it themselves.
- Implant a suggestion into the subject's subconscious that manifests as a dream. The suggestion must be encoded symbolically; the subconscious will interpret it literally but through its own symbolic framework.
- Attempt to "sanitize" a contaminated subconscious. Roll PSI 8+. Success: remove one Dissonance from the subject. Failure: the Dissonance transfers to the psionic.
Risk: If the subject's subconscious contains a Lexicon infection, the psionic is automatically exposed. No roll. No defense.
New Psionic Power: Probability Anchor
Skill: Probability Anchor Time: 1 action Range: Self Strain: 5
The psionic forces their personal timeline to collapse into a single state. This is useful in Predecessor zones or when affected by temporal anomalies.
Effect: For 1D6 rounds, the psionic is immune to probability effects. They act in a single, definite timeline. All attacks against them lose Boon; all their attacks gain Boon.
Cost: When the effect ends, the psionic experiences all the probable timelines they collapsed. Roll PSI 8+ or gain 1D3 Cognitive Load.
Part 3: The Subconscious as Battlefield
The Noosphere
The Noosphere is the collective information space generated by all conscious minds in a system. It is not a physical place. It is a resonance pattern in the electromagnetic and quantum noise of a populated area.
The Dark interacts with the Noosphere. Not by design—by structural compatibility. The phenomena are information-dense. Conscious minds are information-processing systems. Where they meet, emergent structures form.
These emergent structures are not alive. They are memetic weather patterns —self-sustaining loops of thought that propagate through populations.
Memetic Weather Patterns
| Pattern | Trigger | Effect on Population |
|---|---|---|
| The Consensus Dream | A Predecessor zone near a colony | All residents begin dreaming the same dream. The dream contains actionable information about the future. Attempting to act on it causes the future to change, invalidating the dream. |
| The Hum | A Residual zone in a station's infrastructure | Residents hear a low-frequency tone. It has no source. It causes mild euphoria and increased suggestibility. A charismatic individual can implant ideas that spread virally. |
| The Blank | Lexicon fragments in a data network | Affected individuals lose the ability to form new memories for 1D6 hours. During this time, they act normally but will have no recollection. The Blank spreads through conversation. |
| The Double | Observational Hazard in a dense population | People begin seeing duplicates of themselves. The duplicates are not hostile. They simply perform actions the original has not yet decided to take. The original begins to anticipate their own decisions. |
Countermeasures
Cognitive Firewalls (TL 12+): A software/hardware suite that filters Noospheric interference. Cost: Cr 50,000. Effect: immune to memetic weather patterns. Side effect: −2 DM to all psionic powers and Insight checks. The firewall does not distinguish between harmful and beneficial information.
Psionic Quarantine: A psionic with Counter-Intrusion-2+ may attempt to shield a region from Noospheric contamination. Roll PSI 8+. Success: the shielded area (up to 100m radius) is protected for 24 hours. The psionic cannot sleep during this time; they are the firewall.
Part 4: The Psychology of Belief
Why People Serve the Dark
The organizations in The Indifferent Dark (BAC, Church of the Glitch, Optimists, Dreadnoughts, Remembered) are institutional responses. But individuals believe for more intimate reasons. Understanding these motivations is essential for running NPCs—and for players who wish to play believers.
The Five Motivations
| Motivation | Psychology | Typical Role | Reward Sought |
|---|---|---|---|
| Awe | Genuine scientific fascination. The universe is more complex than admitted. They want to map it. | Researcher, cartographer, xenoarchaeologist | Insight, understanding, publication |
| Comfort | The Dark provides certainty in an uncertain universe. Physics may lie, but the phenomenon is real . | Bureaucrat, engineer, soldier | Stability, community, clear purpose |
| Transcendence | The ego is a cage. The Dark dissolves it. They seek Translation or Ascension. | Mystic, artist, terminally ill patient | Dissolution of self, expanded perception |
| Control | If you understand the Dark, you can use it. Power over others through anomalous means. | Executive, crime lord, politician | Profit, dominance, immortality |
| Grief | Someone was lost to the Dark. The believer cannot accept that they are gone. They seek reunion. | Parent, spouse, child, friend | Reversal, communication, proof of life |
Referee Note: No believer thinks they are serving evil. The Dark has no evil to serve. Each believes they have found the only rational response to an irrational universe.
The Reward System of Understanding
Believers do not gain wealth or status from the Dark. They gain frames of reference —ways of perceiving that make the universe comprehensible, even if the comprehension is itself anomalous.
The Comfort of the Lexicon: An infected individual does not lose their mind. They gain a better language. The frustration comes from being unable to share it. Imagine knowing a profound truth and having no words for it. The Church of the Glitch provides a community of fellow speakers.
The Peace of the Residual: A human who spends months in a Residual zone adapts. Their spatial reasoning becomes non-Euclidean. They can navigate impossible architecture effortlessly. Returning to normal space feels cramped , small , wrong . They long for the zone's expanded interior.
The Clarity of the Predecessor: Those who survive temporal eddies often report that linear time feels like a prison afterward. They miss the simultaneity of probable existence. Some seek out new eddies deliberately, chasing the feeling of existing in all possible states at once.
Part 5: Mental States of the Contaminated
Beyond Dissonance, prolonged exposure produces distinct mental states. These are not insanities. They are adaptations —the mind restructuring itself to survive in a universe that does not match its assumptions.
State: Hyper-Association
Cause: Chronic low-level exposure to the Lexicon or Residual zones.
Effect: The character's pattern-recognition systems become overactive. They see meaningful connections everywhere.
Mechanics: Gain Boon on Investigation, Insight, and any task involving pattern recognition. However, the character cannot stop recognizing patterns. They must make INT 8+ to ignore a potential connection, no matter how tenuous. Failure means they become fixated for 1D6 hours.
Roleplay: The character is not paranoid. Paranoia assumes malice. Hyper-Association assumes meaning. Everything means something. The color of the captain's shirt, the serial number on a cargo crate, the timing of a jump drive ignition—all are part of a pattern the character is slowly assembling.
State: Emotional Flatline
Cause: Surviving a Predecessor zone where the character experienced their own death.
Effect: The character's emotional responses become desynchronized from events. They may laugh at a funeral or weep during routine maintenance. This is not inappropriate emotion; it is temporally displaced emotion —feelings from probable futures or pasts bleeding into the present.
Mechanics: Suffer Bane on all social tasks (Carousing, Persuasion, Deception). However, gain +2 DM to resist intimidation, torture, or emotional manipulation—the character has already felt worse things in timelines that did not happen.
State: Ontological Jealousy
Cause: Encountering a phenomenon that demonstrates the universe is "larger" than the character's species can perceive.
Effect: The character becomes obsessed with expanding their own perceptual capacity. They seek psionic enhancement, neural implants, anomalous artefacts, or direct exposure.
Mechanics: The character will take unreasonable risks to encounter phenomena. They gain +1 DM to all rolls in phenomenon zones (adrenaline, focus, joy). Outside phenomenon zones, they suffer −1 DM to all rolls (ennui, impatience, depression).
Progression: If the character reaches Dissonance 9 without Translating, they may attempt self-induced Translation through extreme exposure. This requires a COR 10+ check (or PSI 10+ for psionics). Success: they Translate. Failure: they suffer cascade failure—permanent vegetative state, or death.
State: The Liaison Bond
Cause: Extended partnership between a contaminated individual and an uninfected Liaison.
Effect: The bond becomes psionic in nature, even if neither partner is psionic. They begin to share dreams, emotional states, and occasional surface thoughts.
Mechanics: While within 1 kilometer of each other, both partners gain +1 DM to all rolls. While separated by more than 10 kilometers, both suffer Bane and lose 1 Stamina per day from stress.
Risk: If one partner is contaminated and the other is not, the uninfected partner must make END 8+ each week or gain 1 Dissonance through sympathetic exposure. Love in the Indifferent Dark is literally contagious.
Part 6: Running Psionic Horror
The Rule of Revelation
Never describe a phenomenon directly. Describe its effects on the mind.
Wrong: "The entity is a non-Euclidean horror that drives men mad."
Right: "You reach out with your telepathy and find... nothing. No thoughts. But your telepathy does not return empty. It returns folded . You are now thinking in a shape you did not know thoughts could take. Your Liaison asks if you are alright. You open your mouth to answer and realize you do not know if the words will come out in the right order."
The Rule of Gradation
Dread builds through stages. Each stage should feel like an escalation of intimacy with the phenomenon.
| Stage | Experience | Mechanical Expression |
|---|---|---|
| Distant | Data, rumors, sensor ghosts | No mechanical effect. Unease is roleplayed. |
| Peripheral | Dreams, déjà vu, minor glitches | Dream Contamination. Cognitive Load 1. |
| Personal | Direct perception, physical proximity | Cognitive Load 3+. Dissonance accumulation begins. |
| Intimate | Prolonged exposure, psionic contact | Dissonance 3+. Possible state acquisition. |
| Integrated | Translation, Ascension, or mastery | Character is permanently changed. New abilities. New limitations. |
The Rule of Consent
Horror requires buy-in. Before introducing content that alters a character's mind without their control, discuss it with the player. Offer choices:
- "You can resist the phenomenon and take Dissonance, or you can open yourself to it and gain Insight but lose something personal. What do you choose?"
- "Your character is beginning to dream the crew's dreams. Is this okay? We can stop it with a Dissonance check, or we can explore it."
The Dark is indifferent. The Referee should not be.
Part 7: New Equipment & Drugs
| Item | Cost (Cr) | TL | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oneirocine | 2,000/dose | 12 | Suppresses Dream Contamination for 24 hours. User has no dreams. Upon cessation, all suppressed dreams occur simultaneously (roll 1D6 for each suppressed night; all apply at once). |
| Phenomenol | 10,000/dose | 14 | Allows a non-psionic to use Dread Sense at PSI DM +0 for 1 hour. Afterward, gain 1D3 Cognitive Load and make COR 8+ or gain 1 Dissonance. |
| Cognitive Firewall | 50,000 | 12 | Implanted software. Immune to memetic weather. −2 DM to psionics and Insight. |
| Mnemonic Anchor | 5,000 | 10 | Physical object carried by the character. When experiencing reality distortion, clutching the anchor grants COR 8+ to resist Cognitive Load accumulation. |
| Subconscious Recorder | 15,000 | 13 | Records dreams in playbackable format. Allows others to experience Dream Contamination secondhand (they gain the information without the Dissonance, but suffer Bane for 24 hours from the alien logic). |
| Psionic Damper | 25,000 | 12 | Headgear or implant. Suppresses all psionic abilities. Prevents Strain from phenomenon exposure. Wearer is effectively blind to the Dark—and deaf to warnings. |
